'American Idol' Atlanta Auditions Turn Up The Talent

The city that gave us Fantasia, Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson brought some serious soul Wednesday night (January 13), the second evening of auditions for season nine of "American Idol." With the freak show turned down and the talent turned up, 25 singers got golden tickets, among them a number of girls who knocked it out of the park and one peace officer who surprised everyone.
With her wild curls and neon pants, Memphis, Tennessee's Keia Johnson, 26, who won Miss Congeniality in her Miss America bid, started the show off with a bang, putting a smile on guest judge Mary J. Blige's face with a gospel-y run through the Celine Dion "Titanic" tune "My Heart Will Go On."

Continuing Tuesday's parade of medical backstories, 26-year-old Joliet, Illinois, native Jermaine Sellers — a church singer and caretaker for his mother, who suffers from spina bifida — elicited some whoops with his buttery-soul take on Joan Osborne's "What If God Was One Of Us," which Mary J. dubbed "anointed."
From go, Blige proved herself to be more engaged, entertaining and helpful than Tuesday night's guest judge, stiff former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, even busting out one of Simon Cowell's signature lines — "singing is not for you" — to a contestant who just didn't have it.
One of the night's most inspiring stories didn't need any ER drama to make it compelling. Bridge-jumping Vonore, Tennessee, girl Vanessa Wolfe, 19, hoped that a twangy turn through Old Crow Medicine Show's "Wagon Wheel" on "Idol" would help her get out of a going-nowhere life in her small town. Kara DioGuardi appreciated her country wholesomeness, and even though Simon thought she was "ill-prepared" for the pressure of Hollywood, he loved her authenticity and gave her a golden ticket.
Other standouts included South Dakota waitress Mallorie Haley, whose farm-bred good looks and Jewel-like countrified take on Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" got an instant yes from Blige and raves from the rest of the crew for her confidence.
But the night's unexpected treat was Tennessee cop Bryan Walker, 25, who pleasantly surprised the three judges — Cowell inexplicably took a time-out during Walker's audition — with his Ruben Studdard-ized version of the Carpenters' "Superstar," which brought to mind last year's lovable roughneck Michael Sarver.
Among Atlanta's delusionals was a man who claimed Motown kin and sang an all-over-the-place falsetto/bass tug-of-war original called "Lady We're Not Together Anymore"; the most irritating best friends in the world; and an overconfident TV hostess who pummeled the judges with a bizarre version of Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield."
Sometimes, though, even the potential 10-car pileups can surprise, such as the instantly annoying "guitar girl," whose corny Halloween getup turned Cowell off from the jump. Mary J. summed it up with a succinct "I don't get it." But, somehow, despite eight seasons of failed costumed auditions, Holly Harden's throaty cover of Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man" ended up charming Kara, Randy Jackson and Simon enough to put her through.
Orlando, Florida's one-of-a-kind Antonio "Skii Bo Ski" Wheeler, 22, couldn't spell his own nickname correctly on his costume, but his shtick was overcome by a truly soulful "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" that put a smile on Kara's face thanks to an on-point falsetto.
There were the usual frog callers, a guy who Simon said sounded like a cat barking, another guy nose-singing Britney Spears terribly and, of course, a hothead who was as excited about meeting Mary J. as he was to audition, which was a good thing because his shouty "Kiss From a Rose" made Randy wince and Mary giggle into her Coke cup before security hauled him away.
After surviving a deadly childhood illness, a near-miss with a bullet and a close call with a truck, 26-year-old Alabama welder Jesse Hamilton just couldn't survive his horrible audition, where he murdered Garth Brooks' "If Tomorrow Never Comes," sending Blige into paroxysms of laughter while eating up way too much airtime.
Saving the worst/best for last, Wednesday's show ended with the obligatory too-old-for-the-show throwaway, 62-year-old Vietnam vet General Larry Platt. He busted the room up with an original breakdancing ode to saggy drawers, "Pants on the Ground." It was no "I Am Your Brother," but Simon predicted the ultra-catchy song could be a hit someday.
The auditions continue next Tuesday in Chicago with guest judge Shania Twain.

'Spider-Man 4' Scrapped, Studio Plans 2012 Reboot

Peter Parker is headed back to the big screen in 2012, but he'll be without "Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi or star Tobey Maguire when he swings back into action.

The demise of "Spider-Man 4" was first reported by Deadline Hollywoodon Monday (January 11), with the site claiming Raimi had left the project and the studio had decided to reboot the franchise entirely rather than replace him. According to the report, Raimi's departure was the result of studio pressure to meet the film's summer 2012 release date despite a variety of much-publicized script issues. The site also claimed that Tobey Maguire and the rest of the cast will not return for future films, and the studio will look to reboot the franchise entirely with a script by James Vanderbilt.

Sony later confirmed the report to MTV News, but indicated that a new "Spider-Man" movie is still planned for summer 2012.

"Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next 'Spider-Man' hits theaters in the summer of 2012," the company said in a statement, adding that the planned film will focus on "a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises."

Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said in the statement, "A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three Spider-Man films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning."

Earlier reports had pegged the choice of villain as one of the primary obstacles to "Spider-Man 4" production, with Raimi and the studio differing over potential casting that, most recently, included John Malkovich as winged villain the Vulture.

Earlier Monday, a report surfaced that in the film now leaving many questions regarding his attachment to a new film.

With production deadlines looming for a 2012 premiere, the studio has promised more updates regarding Spider-Man's next big-screen adventure in the near future.

Ellen DeGeneres 'Very, Very Sad' Simon Cowell Is Leaving 'American Idol'

In the wake of Simon Cowell's surprising-but-not-that-surprising announcement that he'll be leaving "American Idol" at the end of the upcoming season nine, one of the first people associated with the show to comment was Ellen DeGeneres, who is beginning her stint as a judge on the show this season.
"I got some news for you. So this just happened, Simon Cowell just announced that he's leaving 'Idol,' " she said during her show's taping on Monday (January 11). "This will be his last season. He announced he's leaving on my first day. I'm trying not to take it personally. But seriously, I am going to be very, very sad to see him go, because I think he's made the show what it is. He's a huge part of that show but he wanted a change. I wish him all the luck in the world hosting 'The Tonight Show.' "

On Monday, after months of rumors and speculation, Cowell confirmed he'll be leaving the "Idol" judges' panel to launch the American version of his other talent show, "The X Factor." In a press release, Fox announced that "The X Factor" will launch in the U.S. in the fall of 2011 with Cowell, creator of the show he launched in the U.K. in 2004, serving as both executive producer and a judge on the U.S. version.
Cowell announced his "Idol" departure at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"We did talk about me staying on both shows but when we looked at the practicalities of that, it was impossible," Cowell told the press. "In my opinion, it's like having a good player and a good football team. The two have to be OK together. I believe it's not my show, but it's still very close to me. We made sure when we did this, that I would be protected. I'm confident it will continue to be the #1 show. Everyone is committed to keeping it that way."
Cowell followed the announcement a short time later by tweeting, "I have had the best 8 or 9 years of my life doing this show."

Lady Gaga Brings Her Shocking Style To Consumer Electronics Show

When word spread that Lady Gaga would be at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Thursday (January 7) to discuss her partnership with Polaroid as the new creative director for a specialty line of products, many wondered: What would the pop star wear? In true Gaga fashion, her outfit definitely stood out.
Gaga's hair was the true centerpiece of the ensemble — which included a see-through black dress and sunglasses — with her blond locks (or a matching hairpiece) styled to resemble a wide-brim straw hat, similar to the oversize hats women wear to the Kentucky Derby.
The singer spoke to the crowd at the CES Polaroid event about why she got involved with the company. "Well, I'm definitely a Polaroid camera girl," she said. "I really believe in the lifestyle and injecting the things that I love into [this]. ... For me, what I'm really excited about is bringing back the artistry and the nature of Polaroid."
Later in the day, with Timbaland by her side, Gaga arrived to help promote the new red version of her Heartbeat headphones. Proceeds will go to Bono's RED campaign. "There will be a red Heartbeat that will also be packaged with an acoustic version of 'Poker Face,' " the singer announced, adding, "We really appreciate you little monsters."
In a statement released earlier about her work with Polaroid, Gaga said, "I am so proud to announce my new partnership with Polaroid as the creative director and inventor of specialty projects. The Haus of Gaga has been developing prototypes in the vein of fashion/technology/photography innovation — blending the iconic history of Polaroid and instant film with the digital era — and we are excited to collaborate on these ventures with the Polaroid brand. Lifestyle, music, art, fashion: I am so excited to extend myself behind the scenes as a designer, and to — as my father puts it — finally have a real job."

Madonna Working With Kanye West's DJ On Next LP

Whether it's her music, image or fashion, Madonna has always been adamant about change and reinvention throughout her career. Her new, yet-untitled album will be no different.
The singer, who is currently hard at work to deliver the follow-up to 2008's Hard Candy, has lined up a series of collaborators, including DJ A-Trak, David Guetta and Fernando Garibay, to help her with a new sound.
"It's my production, turned into song structure — halfway between rap and electronic and whatever else I listen to," DJ A-Trak told British newspaper the Daily Star.
Madonna isn't the only star to work with the DJ recently. A few months ago, A-Trak revealed that he and Kanye West were throwing out several new ideas for his upcoming album. "Kanye's taking a bit of time away from the limelight. But he keeps telling me all these ideas he has for songs and fashion bits," he told the Daily Star in November.
According to the newspaper, Madonna will also infuse some rock into her catalog by working with Pearl Jam producer Brendan O'Brien.
Another collaborator who has scheduled sessions with the Material Girl is David Guetta. When asked who would be his dream collaborator, the French DJ said Madonna remains at the top of his list. "I would love to work with Madonna," he told DigitalSpy.com. "It will probably happen very soon actually. It's all in the early stages and I'm not allowed to speak about it yet!"
Producer Fernando Garibay, who has worked with Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, has also confirmed his involvement with Madonna. When a fan asked Garibay on Twitter when he will work with the Queen of Pop, he tweeted, "Madonna coming soon."

'Spider-Man 4,' 'Thor' And More: An Updated Look At Next Year's Blockbusters

The arachnid-obsessed wonderboy is in limbo, so the lighting-bolt-chucking Norse god has commandeered his coveted spot, freeing up space for the dreadlocked pirate to swoop into the mix.

Allow us to explain. Almost a year ago, Marvel Studios announced that "Spider-Man 4" would arrive in theaters on May 6, 2011. Director Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire were already signed on to return to the franchise, and staking out a prime summer movie slot seemed like a wise move. Until, that is, the "Spider-Man" script started to run into all sorts of problems, with Raimi and the studio reportedly unable to agree on their featured villain.

Troubling news for Spidey fans itching for the first franchise flick since 2007, but a stroke of scheduling luck for another Marvel property: "Thor." Starring Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, "Thor" slid into the May 6, 2011, date just as "Spider-Man 4" hit the brakes.

"Thor" had originally been scheduled to open two weeks later, on May 20. And now that the 20th was momentarily free, another franchise seems to be sailing on in. "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," the fourth of Disney's Johnny Depp-focused adventure tales, has dropped anchor on May 20.

Thus far, the only other film with a solid May '11 release date is "The Hangover 2," the sequel to the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time. June will see the launch of another comic book property, "Green Lantern," as well as two animated sequels: "Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom" and "Cars 2." The franchises will keep coming in July: another "Transformers," the final "Harry Potter" and "The First Avenger: Captain America."

'Twilight,' Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus Win At The People's Choice Awards

The 36th Annual People's Choice Awards kicked off awards season Wednesday (January 6) with a star-studded spectacle hosted by Queen Latifah at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The biggest celebrities in music, television and film were honored by the fans who support them, with a record 60 million votes cast in deciding the winners.
The top honors for the night went to "Twilight," which led the multi-nomination contenders with four wins across six categories. "New Moon" star Taylor Lautner took home Favorite Breakout Movie Star and shared Favorite On-Screen Team with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, as "Twilight" took Favorite Movie and "The Twilight Saga" took Favorite Franchise.
Kristen Stewart lost Favorite Movie Actress to Sandra Bullock, who was recently named the top-earning star of last year for the blockbuster performances of her 2009 hits "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side." Similarly, Robert Pattinson lost Favorite Movie Actor to Johnny Depp, who picked up that award enough in the past 10 years to be named Actor of the Decade.
The night also had its share of surprises. Despite having a terrific year, with starring roles in both "Avatar" and "Star Trek," Zoe Saldana lost out in the Favorite Breakout Actress category to Miley Cyrus. "Hannah Montana: The Movie" was a box-office success, no question, but Saldana closed out her year with a role in one of the biggest movie releases of all time.
Taylor Swift, nominated in three categories, picked up her first People's Choice Award. She only took home one of the three, but it was the big one: Favorite Female Artist. Swift walked gracefully onto the stage with an energized crowd cheering her on and delivered an appreciative, gushing acceptance speech directed at her fans.
The viewers' choices for top TV series were "House" and "The Big Bang Theory" — a surprise win over "How I Met Your Mother" — in Favorite TV Drama and Favorite TV Comedy, respectively. "Supernatural" was another surprise win, beating out "Lost" for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show as anticipation runs high for its upcoming sixth and final season. Newcomers "Glee" and "The Vampire Diaries" were also honored, as Favorite New Comedy and Drama Series, respectively.
The night concluded with the presentation of the Favorite Movie Actor award to Johnny Depp, who had been absent from the show coverage up to that point. "Brüno" star Sacha Baron Cohen delivered an extended introduction for Depp, naming him Actor of the Decade for multiple PCA wins over the past 10 years. The "Alice in Wonderland" star then emerged from backstage to deliver a quiet, heartfelt acceptance speech in his typically humble fashion.
It was a star-studded night, the first of many that we'll witness as we rush headlong into the 2010 awards season.

Taylor Swift Edges Susan Boyle For 2009's Top-Selling Album

Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" reigns for a sixth straight week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 137,000 (down 73%) according to Nielsen SoundScan, bringing her cumulative sales total up to 3,104,000. However, while that is a huge sales sum -- especially considering it was totaled in just six weeks time -- it's not enough to overtake Taylor Swift's "Fearless" as 2009's top selling album. The latter is at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 this week, selling another 60,000 -- bringing its 2009 total to 3,217,000.

Of course, Boyle can rest easy in knowing that her "Dream" is but one of just two albums to sell at least 3 million copies in the U.S. last year -- something that hasn't happened since 2006, when three albums did it. Boyle's "Dream" is also 2009's top selling album released last year (Swift's "Fearless" dropped in late 2008), and was also the top selling physical album of 2009. Of its overall 2009 total, physical CDs accounted for 3,019,000 copies, whereas digital downloads made up a rather tiny 86,000.

Michael Jackson's "Number Ones" is 2009's third biggest-selling album, with 2.36 million according to SoundScan, while Lady Gaga's "The Fame" is fourth with 2.24 million. Andrea Bocelli's recent release "My Christmas" powered through 2.21 million in just nine weeks, making it the year's fifth best. The soundtrack to "Hannah Montana: the Movie" is sixth (1.82 million), followed by the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." (No. 7 with 1.79 million), Eminem's "Relapse" (No. 8 with 1.74 million), Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3" (No. 9 with 1.52 million) and Kings of Leon's "Only By the Night" (No. 10 with 1.40 million).

Fans of Michael Jackson will also be pleased to find out that the King of Pop owns four of the year's top 20 best-selling albums. Not only is "Number Ones" at No. 3 on the year-end list, but the top 20 also houses "This Is It" (No. 12 with 1.29 million), "Thriller" (No. 14 with 1.27 million) and "The Essential Michael Jackson" (No. 20 with 1.15 million).

Jackson is the biggest selling albums artist for 2009 with more than 8.2 million album sales for the year. Swift comes in as the second biggest selling albums artist for 2009 with 4.6 million album sales and the second straight year of 4 million or more album sales.

For the 52-week period January 5, 2009 through January 3, 2010, there were 373.9 million albums sold in the U.S., down 12.7% compared to the same frame of 2008 where 428.4 million albums were sold. However, digital album sales in the same time frame comparison were up a hearty 16.1% -- to an all-time high of 76.4 million in 2009 versus 65.8 million in 2008.

Vinyl LP aficionados can also celebrate in knowing that vinyl album sales totaled 2.5 million in 2009, up a whopping 33% compared to 2008 (1.88 million). More vinyl albums were purchased in 2009 than any other year in the history of Nielsen SoundScan (since 1991).

Total music purchases in 2009 -- which include albums, singles, music videos and digital tracks -- reached the 1.5 billion mark, making it the fifth consecutive year music sales have exceeded 1 billion [1.5 billion (2008), 1.4 billion (2007), 1.2 billion (2006), and 1.01 billion (2005)].

As for the top selling digital songs of the year, 2009 marked the first time a digital song broke the four million sales mark in a single year. And even better -- four songs sailed past the 4 million mark.

The Black Eyed Peas own the Nos. 1 and 2 sellers: "Boom Boom Pow" (4.76 million) and "I Gotta Feeling" (4.43 million). Not to be outdone, Lady Gaga nets both the Nos. 3 and 5 biggest selling tunes with "Poker Face" (4.38 million) and "Just Dance" (3.20 million), respectively. Flo Rida's "Right Round" (No. 4, 4.13 million), Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." (No. 6, 3.16 million), Jay Sean's "Down" (No. 7, 3.05 million), All-American Rejects' "Gives You Hell" (No. 8, 2.88 million), Owl City's "Firelfies" (No. 9, 2.75 million) and Jason DeRulo's "Whatcha Say" (No. 10, 2.71 million) round out the rest of the year's top 10 best selling digital songs.

A whopping 1.159 billion digital tracks were sold in 2009, up 8.3% compared to 2008 (1.070 billion). The biggest selling act, in terms of digital song downloads, was Lady Gaga with more than 15 million in track sales.
